Christina Chong, LMFT, holding hands with her son, a therapist who understands the identity shift of motherhood

You wanted this. You love your kids. And somehow, you still find yourself in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday wondering, when did I stop feeling like myself?

Maybe you feel guilty for not feeling happier. Maybe you’re exhausted in a way that sleep doesn’t fix. Maybe you’re going through the motions of a life that looks beautiful on the outside while quietly wondering where you went. Maybe you feel resentment and then guilt about the resentment, cycling through both on repeat.

You are not broken. You are not a bad mother. You are in the middle of one of the most profound identity transformations a woman can go through, and almost nobody prepares you for it.

Why this happens

There Is Actually a Name for This.

It’s called matrescence, the developmental process of becoming a mother. Just like adolescence marks the transition from childhood to adulthood, matrescence marks the transition into motherhood. It reshapes your identity, your relationships, your sense of purpose, and your understanding of who you are.

And unlike adolescence, nobody really talks about it.

Matrescence doesn’t just happen once. It can happen with your first baby, your second, your third. It can resurface when you return to work, when your kids grow up, when you find yourself in a new season of motherhood you weren’t prepared for. It is not a phase to push through. It is a transformation that deserves real support.

The guilt you feel, the grief for your former self, the exhaustion that goes deeper than tired, the love that coexists with resentment, all of it makes sense. And all of it can be worked through.

Recognize this?

You Might Be Feeling Some of This.

How I help

This Is What Therapy Can Do for You.

Therapy for motherhood and identity is not about becoming a different kind of mother. It’s about finding peace with the mother you actually are.

In our work together, we’ll create space for the feelings you haven’t been able to say out loud. The resentment. The guilt. The grief. The love. All of it is welcome here, without judgment.

We’ll explore who you were before motherhood, who you are becoming, and how to hold both of those things at once. We’ll work through the patterns that are keeping you stuck, the people-pleasing, the perfectionism, the impossibly high standard you hold yourself to. And we’ll build a clearer, more compassionate relationship with yourself so you can show up for your family from a place of wholeness rather than depletion.

I bring a warm, integrative, person-centered approach to this work, drawing from a range of evidence-based methods to meet you exactly where you are. And I bring something else too: I’m a mother myself. I know what it feels like to love your children with your whole heart and still wonder where you went. That lived experience shapes every session, as I share more on my About page.

Virtual sessions are $150. In-person sessions are $180. I also accept Aetna, Cigna, Carelon Behavioral Health, and Optum/United Healthcare through Alma for virtual sessions. Superbills are available for out-of-network reimbursement.

Every stage

Motherhood Looks Different at Every Stage. This Is for All of It.

I work with mothers at every point in the journey, not just new moms. Whether you are:

  • Newly postpartum and feeling unlike yourself
  • A few years into motherhood and still waiting to feel settled
  • Navigating the identity shift that comes with a second or third baby
  • Returning to work and trying to figure out who you are in this new version of your life
  • Further along in the motherhood journey and realizing you've been last on your own list for too long

You belong here. The identity shifts of motherhood do not have an expiration date, and it is never too late to find your way back to yourself. If anxiety is also part of what you’re navigating, see Pregnancy & Postpartum Anxiety, or if you’re looking for community with other mothers, visit the Groups page. Sessions are available virtually anywhere in Florida.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Matrescence is the developmental process of becoming a mother, a profound identity shift that is completely normal but often goes unacknowledged. It can happen with your first baby, your second, or at any stage of the motherhood journey. Many women feel lost, guilty, or unlike themselves during this transition without realizing there is actually a name for what they are going through.
Yes. Feeling guilty for not feeling happier, grieving your pre-mom self, or struggling to recognize who you are now is incredibly common and does not mean something is wrong with you. These feelings are a natural part of the identity transformation that comes with motherhood, and they are exactly what therapy can help you work through.
Sessions are warm, conversational, and tailored to wherever you are in your journey. We might explore the feelings you haven't been able to say out loud, the patterns that keep you stuck, or simply create space for you to process what this season has been like. There is no agenda other than helping you feel more like yourself.
Not at all. I work with mothers at any stage, newly postpartum, a few years in, navigating a second or third baby, or somewhere further along. The identity shifts of motherhood don't have an expiration date.
